Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other’s lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda’s extraordinary personality. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!

Elderly man rescued from Picketwire Canyon

The Otero County Sheriff’s Department released information about a man, described as being in his 70’s, who was stuck at the bottom of Picketwire Canyon on July 17. Their deputies, along with the La Junta Fire department, EMS, and Parks and Wildlife, conducted a search and rescue and located the man after a ‘lengthy haul out of the canyon.’ They transported him to Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center and thanked everyone involved in the rescue, including Officer Steve Keefer.

The geography of mass incarceration in Colorado

One of the most important criminal legal system disparities in Colorado has long been difficult to decipher: Which communities throughout the state do incarcerated people come from? Anyone who lives in or works within heavily policed and incarcerated communities intuitively knows that certain neighborhoods disproportionately experience incarceration. But data have never been available to quantify how many people from each community are imprisoned with any real precision.
