Colorado could see as many as three new immigrant detention centers open before the end of the year, potentially tripling the state’s detention capacity, according to internal U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement planning documents, but La Junta will not be one them, at least for now.

On Monday, Aug. 11, the La Junta Police Department announced that they were investigating a shooting from the night prior, Aug. 10, 2 minutes before midnight, which left one person hospitalized with a gunshot wound.
The Bent County Sheriff’s Office announced that on the early morning of Sunday Aug. 10, at around 5: 30 a.m., deputies responded to a “solo vehicle collision” on the intersection of Third street and Bent Ave. in Las Animas.
