A Memorial Service for Marlys Allen will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 30, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church in Las Animas, Colorado. Per Marlys’ request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Bent/Las Animas Cemetery. Marlys Jeanine Allen passed away on January 24, 2023 in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the age of 85. She was born on November 19, 1937 in Onley Springs, Colorado to W.T. and Ramona (Shirley) Setchfield. Marlys’ family moved to Las Animas in 1942 where she attended Frey Elementary School and Columbian Junior High School and graduated from Bent County High School in 1955. Marlys then began work at Jeffers Drugs Store in Las Animas, working there for several years. In 1972, she started working at Las Animas Light and Power. She worked there until retiring in 2000, having served as bookkeeper and secretary to the superintendent and Power Board for over 20 of those years. Marlys later went back to work for four years in the Bent County Treasurer’s Office, finally retiring in 2013 due to severe health issues. Throughout the years, she was very active in the First Christian Church of Las Animas, becoming a member when she was in junior high. Marlys sang in the choir; taught Sunday school classes; served several years as Sunday school superintendent; and was on the church board. She enjoyed being a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club (BPW), where she served a term as vice president and later as president. Marlys was secretary for the Pioneer Historical Society for several years. Family was very important to Marlys, and tried to attend everything that her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids were involved in (school plays, choir concerts, sports, etc.). She was an avid reader, reading almost constantly in her later years. Marlys enjoyed doing crosswords and other puzzles; even teaching her great grandson Sudoku in her last few months. A Memorial Service for Lillian Laney will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 27, 2023 at the First Baptist Church in Las Animas, Colorado with Pastor Diane Hutson officiating. Inurnment will take place at Fort Lyon National Cemetery at a later date. Those that knew Lillian would understand her request for those in attendance to come in tie-dye and jeans. Lillian F. Laney passed away in Las Animas, Colorado on January 14, 2023 at the age of 65. She was born on July 29, 1957 in El Dorado, Kansas to William and Wilma Jean (McElhiney) Kimberlin. Lillian grew up in Chase County, Kansas. She graduated from Elmdale Schools and continued her education at Kansas State University. Lillian was united in marriage to Terry Laney on December 13, 1974. This union was blessed with one son, Harley. The family relocated frequently, following Terry’s job with the Railroad, until they settled in Las Animas, Colorado in 1980. Lillian worked as a substitute teacher, prison guard, and massage therapist. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, tie dye, collecting skulls, and loved people. Lillian was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Southside Club. Lillian is survived by her son, Harley Laney of Las Animas, Colorado; her companion, Roy Barnhart, as well as many friends. William “Bill” Lewis passed away on December 21, 2022, in Pueblo, Colorado at the age of 89. Per his request, cremation has taken place. A come and go Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, December 30, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Horber Funeral Chapel. Inurnment will be at Navajo Cemetery in Oklahoma at a later date. Bill was born on May 24, 1933, in Newton, KS, to Eugene and Mary (Palmer) Lewis. Bill was one of 5 boys, Kenny, Bob, Cliff, and Jim. His dad worked for Santa Fe Railroad which moved the family to La Junta, Colorado, when Bill was in grade school. Bill had a paper route as a kid and also worked at the bowling alley setting up pins. He was a member of the Boy Scouts and when he was older was a member of the Koshares. Bill was an Air Force veteran and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. He met the love of his life, Sue, in Altus, Oklahoma, after his service. They were united in marriage in 1957 and had 3 children. He and his brother, Bob, owned Lewis Conoco in La Junta and later was a business owner in Las Animas. He retired from CDOT after 30 years. Bill and Sue were members of the Las Animas golf course. Bill loved to go and have coffee at Pat’s Café, Java Jackie’s and the 1st National Bank. He loved to spend time with his grand kids. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Sue; parents, Eugene and Mary Lewis; brothers, Kenny, Bob and Cliff. He is survived by his brother, Jim Lewis; children, Suzette (Steve) Eck, Gina (Terry) Lewis, Ray (Debbie) Lewis; grandchildren, Chris (Amber) Weir, Dax Moser, Eric (Audrey) Trujillo, and Ryan Trujillo; 10 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson, nieces and nephews.
