The Las Animas Lady Trojans traveled to Hoehne on Monday to face the Lady Farmers in Santa Fe League District action. This game was the beginning of the District Tournament, and a win against Hoehne in the tournament would be one in several steps necessary to stamp their place in the Regional Tournament that begins this week.
Success at the Colorado High School State Wrestling Championships is often defined by how well a representative team fares against top tier competition. As a whole, however, Arkansas Valley wrestlers, representing seven teams and nine school districts, fared very well over the three-day tournament, whereas five individual champions and two runners-up were crowned during the culmination of the event, Saturday’s championship finals at Ball Arena in Denver.
Four teams remain in the hunt to nab the Class 2A Girls’ District 6 Tournament Championship Saturday afternoon at La Junta High School, a list that include Fowler and Crowley County. Every remaining tournament team held seed against their lower seeded opponents, whereas West second seeded Fowler knocked off East third seeded Swink Monday evening, 51-20, and West top seeded Crowley County easily handles West fourth seeded John Mall, 48-2.
Both the McClave and Cheraw boys’ basketball teams are safely through to the championship semifinal round of the Class 1A District 2 Tournament, while the Cheraw girls’ team faltered in the opening round of tournament play and will wait regional seeding next week.
The atmosphere at Ball Arena will once again be abuzz this week as hundreds of Colorado high school wrestlers converge on the arena for the 2023 Colorado High School State Wrestling Championships. The pinnacle of high school wrestlers and fans throughout the state, a total of 38 wrestlers from the Arkansas Valley, representing seven programs, will compete Thursday-Saturday for an opportunity to join an elite club of athletes to call themselves ‘state champion’, while at least one team, will be in the hunt for an overall team championship come Saturday evening.
