A joint effort with Bent County Social Services and the City of Las Animas has resulted in an exciting opportunity for our community in the form of adult education opportunities.

With a grant that provided the funding for educational programs, we have built a classroom in the Bent County/LA Public Library that can seat up to 20 students with new computers and connections to online classroom courses as well as the possibility of courses with Otero Junior College and Lamar Community College.

The program is specifically designed to provide opportunities for our community members who meet the criteria for TANF Program support. This includes the majority of our community, however, and should not be a limiting factor in deciding whether to take advantage of the opportunity.

Generally speaking, for the majority of our community members, the program will be eligible for financial aid to pay for the courses for the most part. The next step in the process is to determine which classes are desired and get the people from Student Services to come and do registrations/financial aid.

Two courses that OJC can offer easily are Math 050 (this is the math that will prepare for college algebra) and CIS 118 (Introduction to Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint).

If we can get enough students to do these classes they can be offered as an instructor led course. The hours of the classroom will be Monday from 12-5, Tuesday and Friday from 10-5, Wednesday and Thursday from 10-6, and Saturday from 9-2.

Please contact Mayor Jim Collins at the City Hall or Social Services Director Jonna Parker with your interest and when you would like to take courses so we can schedule with OJC and not waste this valuable opportunity to start doing good things together. There is also a sign-up sheet in the library to help with the process.
