May 12-15, the 19th "Annual Rollin' Along the Santa Fe Trail" Auto Tours and "Bent on Birding and Heritage" field trips are scheduled in Las Animas in conjunction with Colorado Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month. This provides a popular annual venue for visiting southeast Colorado during May. Register to join any or all of the four day or evening trips. Meeting place this year is Las Animas Dairy Queen, not Bent's Fort Inn.
Over 400 migrating and resident birds and other wildlife have been sighted in the canyons, plains, lakes, rivers and ranches, featuring historic petroglyphs and dinosaur track attractions. Expert guides are available at this annual event seeking the elusive black rail, piping plover, least tern and more. Highlights also include historic homesteads and sites where Kit Carson, Zeb Pike, William Bent, St. Vrain, Prowers, Boggs, Ambassador Thompson, 'Festus' of Gunsmoke and others lived or explored. Have lunch on the trail and dine with guides in the evenings, see movies, go on day trips and night hikes to seek nocturnal birds.
On Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., a field trip is planned to a private ranch to view petroglyphs, dinosaur prints, wildlife and birds (4-wheel drive/high clearance required.)
On Friday and Saturday at 7:30 a.m., tours will depart with bird expert Duane Nelson to visit areas where the rare piping plover, least tern and black rail have been found.
Also on Saturday, John Martin Reservoir State Park has planned special birding and wildlife activities.
On Sunday from 7-9 a.m., early birding is planned with a private guide. Other options include visits to Bent's Old Fort, Boggsville, Amache and Sand Creek Massacre site.
Space is limited. Donations are requested. For more information or registration, contact: BentOnBirding@yahoo.com, or call (719) 980-1320, (719) 456-1296.
