Former La Junta High School student-athlete Zerek Jones has been one of Chadron State (Nebraska) College's outstanding track athletes this season, running the 400-meter dash in 47.53 seconds and running the 800-meter run in 1:50.30.

However, in an effort to score more points at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference track and field championships this past weekend at Black Hills State University, he also high jumped for the first time in two years.

The results were good as he jumped 6-7 1/2 while winning the silver medal.

He was also the runner-up in the 400 meters and ran on the third place 4x400-meter relay team.

After high jumping and running in the preliminaries in both track events and in the finals in the 400, he was exhausted when the 800 came around and he finished seventh in 2:01.22.

He will concentrate on the 800 this weekend as he will compete in two "last chance" meets at the Colorado School of Mines.

He is the son of Penny Jones of La Junta.
