 SWINK — The County Line Rivals baseball team upset top seed Swink on May 14 to advance to the District 6 championship game, where they eventually fell to eventual champion, Rocky Ford.

County Line 7, Swink 4

In the fist game of the day, the Lions opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first. The Rivals tied the score in the top of the third, but Swink regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the third.

Lucas Salazar gave the Rivals the lead with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth. He hit another two-run blast in the sixth to give County Line a 6-3 advantage.

Both teams scored a run in the seventh inning.

Caden Eastin started for County Line on the mound, but he did not figure in the decision. Christian Dellameastra entered the game in the third and he took the win.

Trey Redner was Swink's starting pitcher and he took the loss. Tory Valencia went to the mound in the fifth and Todd Redner Jr. finished the game.

Rocky Ford 1, Crowley County 0

Rocky Ford and Crowley County were engaged in a pitcher's dual in the second semifinal.

The two teams were involved in the same situation the previous week. In that game, the Chargers defeated the Meloneers 1-0.

On Saturday, the score was once again 1-0, this time with Rocky coming out on top.

The Meloneers scored the only run of the game in the top of the second.

Brian Preston went the distance as the Meloneers' pitcher and he earned the win.

Grady Carter started for the Chargers and he was dealt the loss. Hayden Carter went to the mound in the sixth.

Rocky Ford 8, County Line 5

The Meloneers wrapped up the tournament by defeating County Line in the championship by a score of 8-5.

The Rivals took the early lead as Dellamaestra hit a solo home run in the top of the first. The Meloneers tied the score in the bottom of the inning and they took a 2-1 lead in the second.

Steven Weber sparked a two-run third with a solo homer, but Rocky tied the score again at 3-3 in the fourth. The Meloneers scored three in the fifth to claim a 6-3 lead.

Both teams scored twice in the sixth.

Greg Garcia went the distance as the Meloneers' pitcher and he claimed the win.

Weber started as the Rivals' pitcher. He was relieved by Eastin in the fourth and he took the loss.

Records

Rocky Ford is now 13-5 on the season and it automatically qualifies for a Class 2A Region Tournament. Swink is 15-5, Crowley County is 13-7 and County Line is 14-5. All three of those teams qualified for the regional tournament based on their ratings performance index (RPI).

Regionals

The County Line Rivals will be the first local team to play as it will face off against Limon Friday in the Region 2 Tournament at 10 a.m. at Andenucio Field. The Rivals (14-5) are the No. 4 seed in the ratings performance index (RPI), while the Badgers (16-4) are the 13th seed.

In the other side of that bracket, fifth-seeded Hotchkiss (17-2) will play 12th-seeded Peyton (16-3) at 12:30 p.m.

The County Line/Limon and Hotchkiss/Peyton winners will play at 3 p.m.

Crowley County (13-7), the No. 9 seed, will take on eighth-seeded Akron (17-5) at 12:30 p.m. in the Region 1 Tournament at Hobbs Field on Friday.

Also in that bracket, top-seeded Paonia (20-1) will play 16th-seeded Sargent (17-2) at 10 a.m.

Those winners will play at 3 p.m.

The other two local teams, Swink (15-5) and Rocky Ford (13-5) will play in the Region 3 Tournament at Andenucio Field on Saturday.

The Lions, the No. 3 seed, will play Dayspring Christian Academy (13-4), the 14th seed, at 10 a.m.

The Meloneers, the sixth seed, will face 11th-seeded Dawson School (14-4) at 12:30 p.m.

The winners will play at 3 p.m.

The remaining tournament will be the Region 4 Tournament Saturday at Hobbs Field. It will have second-seeded Sedgwick County (20-1) playing 15th-seeded and defending state champion Rye (16-3) at 10 a.m., while seventh-seeded Resurrection Christian (12-7) will play 10th-seeded Haxtun (15-6) at 12:30 p.m. Those winners will play at 3 p.m.

The winners of each of the four brackets will return to the Runyon Sports Complex for the Class 2A State Tournament Final Four on May 28.
