Twenty-four graduating seniors took their final walk as high school students Sunday afternoon at Las Animas High School to commemorate commencement ceremonies for the class of 2016.

Twenty-four graduating seniors took their final walk as high school students Sunday afternoon at Las Animas High School to commemorate commencement ceremonies for the class of 2016.

Kathryn Peterson performed the national anthem followed by a reminiscent welcoming speech from class president Angelica Melendez. Melendez reflected on her years at Las Animas and higlighted the accomplishments of the class of 2016.

Valedictorian Ashlie Stwalley also reflected upon her years at Las Animas saying, "How do we measure the time we've spent in high school? At first we measured it in class periods, counting down the days until freedom. As the days turned into weeks we began to measure it in semesters and later years. ... And now here we stand. I know that as I look out at all of you, my friends, my family, I will measure my time here in a much different way. I will measure it in the friendships that have been created. ... Wherever we go and whatever we do, may we always be friends when we meet again."

A custom at graduations, a senior slideshow was presented, which highlighted the journey of graduating seniors throughout their years at Las Animas. Parents were then presented gifts from each member of the class of 2016, followed then by the salutatorian address from Karla Hernandez.

Guidance counselor Addie Wallace recognized students who recieved scholarships, and eight students were recognized as college prep students.

Superintendent Tom Meardon and Principal Elsie Goines conducted the presentation of the class and the Board of Education presented diplomas to each of the 24 graduating seniors.

Closing remarks were said by senior Shayna Phillips followed by a recessional and the conclusion of commencement ceremonies.
