PUEBLO — The 2016 season came to an end for all four Class 2A District 6 high baseball teams, including the County Line Rivals, this weekend in Pueblo. The Rivals were defeated by Limon 4-0 in a regional semifinal game at the Runyon Sports Complex Friday.
“I wish we would have had a better showing than that,” said County Line coach Dave Eastin. “But that’s what it is.”
The first three innings were scoreless before the Badgers struck for two runs in the top of the fourth. James Larson and Cannan Bennett both singled and both came home as Matthew Florek was safe on an error.
Limon scored another run in the fifth. Braden Kappel led off with a double, and he went to third as Cole Younger was safe on another error. After Tristen Cesko reached first base on a fielder’s choice, Larson singled to score Kappel and give the Badgers a 3-0 lead.
Limon added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Joe Stephen got on first base on an error, and he went to second on Kappel’s sacrifice bunt. Stephen took third on a wild pitch, and he scored on Cesko’s sacrifice fly.
Caden Eastin was County Line’s starting pitcher and he took the loss. He allowed three runs and eight hits, and he had seven strikeouts and one walk.
Christian Dellamestra pitched the final two innings, and he gave up one run and one hit. He struck out one and walked none.
Stephen, the Limon pitcher, went the distance and he had a four-hit shutout. The Rivals’ only hits were doubles by Eastin and Carl McKenzie and singles by Dellamaestra and Blake Brubacher.
County Line finished the season with 14 wins and six losses. It loses only four seniors in Eastin, Dayton Garcia, Luis Lopez and Michael Sanders.
“Hopefully, we’ll learn from this, move on and be back next year,” coach Eastin said.
