Thirty-one Vietnam veterans were recognized and welcomed home at the Las Animas All School Class Reunion held on May 28.

VFW Auxiliary Post #2411 President, Pamela K. Valdez described the proclamation signed by President Obama, where March 29 and 30, 2016 were set apart to kick off the 50th Commemoration of the Vietnam veteran. One of the commemoration objectives is to recognize, honor and welcome back the Vietnam veteran. She read the meaning behind the crafted lapel pin designed for the event. They were recognized, pinned by Auxiliary members, and given an American flag and Buddy Poppy. These Vietnam veterans received a well deserved standing ovation from the 400 plus people attending. Charles Watkins, Class of ’67, also gave each Vietnam veteran a “Welcome Home” coin that he and his wife, Donna, presented to all returning soldiers at Fort Carson.

Charles, also a Vietnam veteran, said that he was never welcomed home and has made it a part of his life to welcome home all soldiers in Colorado Springs.
