The week after Christmas break was a long one for the Las Animas Lady Trojans. Schedules rarely require playing three games in a week except for the winter tournament, but the Trojans played Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday last week; all in Santa Fe League matches.

On Jan. 6 against the Lady Farmers of Hoehne, rescheduled due to weather the previous weekend, the Ladies struggled to break the double-digit mark each quarter, while giving up as many as 33 in each quarter. The Lady Farmers emerged victorious 36-57.

For the Lady Trojans, Leah Vida led the way with eight points while the team struggled. As a whole, the Lady Trojans were a mere 13/40 from the floor and only 2/12 from the three-point line. The shortest player on the team, Angelica Martinez, led the team in rebounds with five.

With a few days of practice, the Ladies then hosted the Lady Grizzlies of Fowler. Scoring better in each quarter, the Lady Trojans tried to recover from an 11 point lead that the Lady Grizzlies generated in the first quarter, but couldn't Despite a 13 point fourth quarter, the Lady Trojans fell again 37-52.

Vida led again with 10 points, and the team shot 13/37 - statistically a bit better than Tuesday's matchup, and 4/11 from the three point line - twice better than Tuesday. Haylie Stwalley aided the Lady Trojans by grabbing six rebounds.

Finally, to end the week: a rivalry matchup in Swink against the Lady Lions. Sadly, the Lady Trojans lost a one-sided match. The Lady Trojans gave up 25 points in the first quarter while only scoring eight of their own. That hole was insurmountable. With a final score of 27-57, the Lady Trojans lost their third game of the week.

Angelica Martinez led the Lady Trojans with 10 points while the team shot 10/29 from the floor, and shot exponentially fewer three-pointers

This week is Winter Sports week in Las Animas. The Lady Trojans face the Lady Panthers of John Mall in Walsenburg at 5 p.m. Then, on Saturday, the Ladies host the Swallows Academy Spartans. Game time on Saturday is 2 p.m.
