Some of the local high school track and field teams competed in meets in Holly and Kiowa on Saturday.

Holly Invitational

HOLLY — Cheraw, Las Animas and McClave high schools were at the Holly Invitational, which took place at the Wildcats’ field.


Cheraw High School scored only four points in the boys’ meet which was good for 14th place.

All of the Wolverines’ points came from Drew Yochum, who tied for fourth place in the high jump at 5-5.

The Lady Wolverines did not score.

Las Animas

Las Animas High School was ninth in the boys’ meet with 33 points. Two Trojans scored as Richard Gallegos was fourth in the 200-meter dash in 25.35 seconds and sixth in the triple Jump at 37-7 1/4, and Jeremiah Skinner was fifth in the long jump at 18-3 3/4 and sixth in the 100 in 12.16.

Las Animas placed in two relay events. It finished fourth in the 4x800 in 9:32.68 and fifth in the 4x200 in 1:43.71.

The Lady Trojans were 12th in the girls’ meet with 18 points. They were led by Leticia Martinez, who won the triple jump at 31-5 1/2. She was also fifth in the long jump at 14-3.

Makayla Huffman also placed in two events. She took fourth in the 800 in 2:49.48 and sixth in the 1,600 in 6:12.63.

Las Animas finished seventh in the 800 sprint medley in 2:16.28.


The McClave High School boys’ team took second place with 79 points.

The Cardinals had two double champions as Darian Herrera won the 200 in 23.81 and he tied for first in the high jump at 5-7. He also placed third in the 100 in 11.71.

Jake Trujillo won the shot put at 41-8 1/4 and the discus at discus at 119-3. He also took fifth place in the 100 in 12.12.

Also scoring for the McClave boys were Marcus Perales, who was second in the 800 in 2:18.82, Brandon Kiniston, who was fourth in the 400 in 55.74, and James Steerman, who was seventh in the 800 in 2:27.56.

The Cardinals scored in two relays. They were second in the 4x400 in 3:48.04 and third in the 4x800 in 9:22.39.

The Lady Cardinals took ninth place with 33 points. They were led by Tatum Chase, who tied for first in the high jump at 4-9.

Other McClave girls who scored were Jeanette Steerman, who was second in the 1,600 in 6:04.82 and sixth in the 800 in 2:52.06, Ryely Smartt, who was fifth in the shot put at 31-9 and seventh in the 300 hurdles in 55.60, and Jordan Parker, who was seventh in the long jump at 13-9 3/4.

The Lady Cardinals finished fifth in the 800 sprint medley in 2:08.28.

Kiowa Classic

KIOWA — Rocky Ford High School sent a small number of athletes to the Kiowa Invitational, which took place at the Indians’ field.

The Meloneers finished sixth in the boys’ meet with 41 points. Four Rocky athletes placed as Enriquez Romero finished second in the discus at 115-2 and third in the shot put at 38-5, Seth Havens placed third in the 100 in 12.13, third in the 200 in 25.33 and fourth in the 400 in 58.62, Ricardo Santiago was sixth in the discus at 91-10, and Noel Lopez was seventh in the 1,600 in 5:40.22.

The Meloneers were fourth in the 4x800 in 11:04.89.

The Lady Meloneers were seventh with 24 points. Two Rocky girls scored as Summer Ortiz took second in the 3,200 in 15:46.31 and fifth in the 1,600 in 7:15.33, and Irene Robledo finished second in the shot put at 29-2 3/4 and fifth in the discus at 85-8.

La Junta, Cheraw, Las Animas and Rocky Ford will be at the Primero Invitational in Weston on Thursday. La Junta and Rocky Ford will participate in the Coronado Cougar Classic in Colorado Springs on Friday. Kim/Branson, Las Animas, McClave, Rocky Ford and Swink will compete in the Springfield Invitational on Saturday. Crowley County and Fowler will be at the High Altitude Challenge in Alamosa on Saturday.
