PUEBLO — The County Line Rivals baseball team won two games in the first day of the Class 2A State Tournament Saturday at the Runyon Sports Complex's Andenucio Field and it has advanced to the state semifinal round.

The Rivals opened the tournament by defeating the Evangelical Christian Academy 6-2 and then they held off a late Burlington rally to win 6-5.

"I don't know what to say other than that I'm so proud of these guys battling adversity," said County Line coach Dave Eastin. "Huge adversity. So I'm just really proud of our guys right now. That's all I can say."

ECA took the first lead of the game with a run in the top of the second. Caleb Klopfenstin was safe on a fielder's choice and he stole second. Klopfenstin came home on Cameron Rawlings' single to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

The Rivals took the lead by scoring three runs in the third. Cal Garcia led off with a double and Blake Brubacher was safe on an error, sending Garcia to third. Steven Weber also doubled to drive home Garcia and Brubacher and County Line had a 2-1 lead.

Christian Dellamaestra followed with a walk and Weber came home on Lucas Salazar's single.

County Line added a run in the fourth. Gerardo Salas had a leadoff single and he took second on Garcia's sacrifice bunt. Salas took third on a passed ball and he scored on a wild pitch increasing the lead to 4-1.

Evangelical Christian reduced the deficit by scoring a run in the fifth. Klopfenstin led off with a single and he went to third on Rawlings' sacrifice bunt. Tyler Schwink also singled, sending Klopfenstin to third and Klopfenstin came home on Ben DeRuiter's sacrifice fly.

The Rivals put two more runs on the board in the sixth. Garcia drew a walk and Brubacher was hit by a pitch. Weber singled home Garcia, but Brubacher was forced out on Dellamaestra's ground ball.

Cole Smith's single drove home Weber to wrap up the scoring.

Weber was County Line's starting pitcher and he took the win. He allowed two runs and five hits and he had six strikeouts and only one walk. Dellamaestra finished the game and he gave up no runs and no hits and he struck out one.

The Rivals had 11 hits and they were led by Weber, who went 3-4 with a double and three RBIs and Carl McKenzie, who went 2-3.

County Line 6, Burlington 5

The Rivals faced Burlington in the quarterfinal round after the Cougars defeated Yuma 3-1.

County Line took the lead by scoring once in the bottom of the first. Brubacher was hit by a pitch to begin the game and Weber followed with a double. Dellamaestra drew a walk to load the bases and Smith was safe on an error with Brubacher scoring.

The Rivals scored another run in the second. Garcia struck out, however, the ball got past the Burlington catcher, Bubba Salazar, and Garcia made it safely to first. Brubacher walked and Garcia scored as an error occurred on Weber's ground ball.

The Cougars scored their first run in the fourth. Braden Witzel was safe on an error and Case Rieber followed with a single. Witzel went to third on a wild pitch and he came home on Todd Blandford's groundout.

County Line scored a run in its half of the fourth. Brubacher singled and he came all the way around to score on Weber's second double of the game.

Burlington tied the score in the top of the fifth. Jett County singled and Max Halde was safe on an error, sending County to third. Bubba Salazar singled home County and Halde scored on Witzel's single to knot the score at 3-3.

The Rivals regained the lead with a three-run sixth. Garcia started the rally with a walk, Weber singled and Dellamaestra walked to load the bases. Garcia came home on Smith's infield pop-up single and Colin Lindo singled to score Weber and Dellamaestra.

The Cougars attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh. County led off by getting on first base on an error and he stole second. Cody Burghart doubled home County to cut the deficit to 6-4. Witzel's single brought home Burghart and the lead was reduced to 6-5.

Burlington had the potential tying run on third and the potential go-ahead run in Rieber on second. But Blandford popped up to first to end the game.

Dellamaestra started on the mound for the Rivals and he was the winning pitcher. He allowed three runs and seven hits and he had 10 strikeouts, no walks and one hit batter. Brubacher started the seventh and he gave up two runs and two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Weber walked the only batter he faced and McKenzie finished the game and he earned the save by retiring the only batter to face him.

The Rivals had seven hits and they were again led by Weber, who went 3-4 with two doubles and one RBI.

Rivals face Paonia next

County Line (19-2) will face top-seeded Paonia in the semifinal round on Saturday. The Eagles defeated Sargent 12-2 and Hotchkiss 1-0 in their first two games.

"We know all about them," Eastin said. "They're really good. But baseball is a crazy game, so we'll show up and see what they have."

Game time is at 9:30 a.m. at the Runyon Sports Complex's Hobbs Field.
