The Las Animas Trojan Track and Field squad hopped on a bus and headed to Burlington for the final track meet of the regular season. The Trojans looked to improve by leaps and bounds in some cases, and by mere inches in others to qualify for the CHSAA State Track and Field competition this coming weekend.

By all accounts, sadly, the Trojans fell short.

All looking for PRs, Gabe DeVargas was one of the very few Trojans placing at the meet as he placed eighth in the 800M and his brother, Maranatha, placed sixth in the 1,600M run. The Trojan 3,200M Relay took third, but their best time remained at 9:27. Jeremiah Skinner placed sixth in the long jump, and Richard Gallegos placed 5th in the triple jump.

The girls had some placing higher. Leticia Martinez placed sixth in the 100M dash, third in the 200M run, and first in the long jump with a jump of 14’9”, and fourth in triple jump; Makayla Huffman placed eighth in the 800M run, third in the 1,600M Run.

The Trojans still have a chance at state as other qualifiers may drop out for various reasons – better qualifying relays, eligibility, etc. – and with several athletes and relays close to number 18, the Trojans will find out Monday at some point when CHSAA posts heat sheets and schedules for state.

Otherwise, the Trojans will miss the leadership of Jeremiah Skinner and Isaac Gonzales as seniors on the track and field squad. Good luck in your future endeavors, and GO TROJANS!
