Glen Campbell salute leads off, Simon & Garfunkel end

The 72nd season of the Arkansas Valley Community Concert Association (AVCCA) begins Sept. 30 with “Salute to Glen Campbell.” This concert is especially timely, as Campbell died last month. The concert will feature Jeff Dayton, Campbell’s bandleader and guitarist, playing such Campbell favorites as “Galveston,” “Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Wichita Lineman.”

Other concerts planned for the 2017-2018 season include Anderson Brothers Jazz Combo, playing “Stardust” and “Begin the Beguine,” and Jeffco Brass Ensemble, 16 musicians performing Big Band, Dixieland and traditional marches. The Beijing Guitar Duo is two young women from China playing classical guitar. Roy and Rosemary, piano and violin, play “Autumn Leaves,” “Misty” and “Moon River.” The season will end with Scarborough Fair, two guitarists playing and singing such Simon and Garfunkel favorites as “Sounds of Silence” and “Bridge Over Troubled Waters.”

These six concerts will be performed at home in the Ed Stafford Theatre in Otero Junior College’s Humanities Center. In addition, AVCCA season tickets provide admission to 22 other concerts scheduled for Lamar, Canon City, Burlington, Raton and Johnson City. Twelve of those reciprocal concerts are duplicates, allowing AVCCA members who missed a concert at home a make-up opportunity. Ten of those concerts are brand new musical experiences, providing a 2017-2018 season of 16 unique concerts for AVCCA members.

AVCCA also provides area school children exposure to some of the professional musicians who will be coming to La Junta this season. Two of the groups who will be performing evening concerts for members will perform an additional afternoon concert with a question-and-answer opportunity for youngsters. AVCCA provides these musical experiences free to schools and parents who can bring their students to the OJC campus.

Season tickets can be purchased from AVCCA board members, or phone Kathy Parker (384-8017) or Jill Manley (468-2039). Tickets for adults are $50, students are $25 and entire families living under the same roof are $125. Any business that would like to help sponsor these musical events can call Jan Blair (384-9414) or Sally Kappel (384-4580).
