LAS ANIMAS — The Las Animas High School football team committed five turnovers as the Trojans lost to Custer County 36-6 Saturday at Jack LaSalle Trojan Field.

"We had a hard time throwing the ball today," said LA coach James Lopez. "Our quarterback didn't have confidence in himself. But we'll work on that in practice and we'll fix it."

The Bobcat special teams set up their first points as Billy Berry blocked Dylan Hogue's punt and Custer County recovered on the Trojans' 14. The Bobcats scored five plays later as Chad Lewenkamp tossed a 4-yard touchdown to Dylan Schloch. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful and Custer County led 6-0.

The score remained at 6-0 until late in the second quarter when David Kinsey broke through the middle and ran 58 yards for a touchdown. Again the two-point conversion failed and the Bobcats led 12-0 at halftime.

Kinsey scored again on the second play of the second half, this time on a 49-yard run. Kinsey also ran for two points and Custer County led 20-0.

The Trojans looked to get a drive going on their next possession as they advanced to the Custer County 41. However, Las Animas turned the ball over on downs.

The Bobcats fumbled the ball right back to the Trojans and Las Animas took advantage this time as they went 54 yards on 11 plays with Jake Davis scoring on a 7-yard run. The two-point play failed and the Trojans cut the deficit to 20-6.

Las Animas then executed a successful onside kick. However, the drive ended with the Trojans fumbling the ball.

Custer County cashed in the turnover with Lewenkamp throwing a 15-yard scoring strike to Schloch. Kinsey made the two-point conversion to raise the Bobcats' lead to 28-0.

The Trojans again attempted to get a scoring drive started and they advanced to the Bobcats' 1. However, Las Animas again turned the ball over on downs.

The Trojans got a second chance after Custer County fumbled the ball away on its own 4. But again, Las Animas came away empty and to add insult to injury, Emilio Gallegos' pass was intercepted by Patrick Post and returned 98 yards for a touchdown. Wyatt Aldrich made the two-point conversion to increase the Bobcat lead to 36-6.

Las Animas had 257 yards of total offense with 166 coming on the ground and 87 in the passing game. Davis led the Trojans' running game with 110 yards on 21 carries and Gallegos had 44 yards on 25 carries.

Gallegos completed seven of 20 passes for 76 yards and Miles Rader completed both of his passes for 11 yards. Rader led in receptions with two for 28 yards and Davis had two receptions for 27 yards. Justin Miller had two catches for 14 yards and Gallegos had two for 11 yards.

Las Animas (1-2) will play at Swink this coming Friday.

"Swink's good," Lopez said. "I watched them Friday night and they didn't do too bad against McClave. But we'll be ready. I think we can match up well with them. We just have to bring our A game and today, we didn't do that."

Kickoff at Gene Brown Field is at 7 p.m.
