The Rocky Ford High School wrestling team qualified all 14 of its competitors for the Class 2A State Championship Meet as the Meloneers easily won the Class 2A Region 4 Tournament this past weekend at Otero Junior College's McDivitt center.

"That was the goal to get them all through, and we did that," said Rocky coach Mike Jurney. "Would have liked had better finishes from some of them, but that's OK. We got them there and everybody is 0-0, so we're happy about that."

The Meloneers had nine finalists and five of them took home regional individual championships. Winning their weight divisions were Dillon Jaramillo (113), Santino Mendoza (126), Diego Reyes (160), Jesse Tapia (170), and Greg Garcia (285).

Jade Cozart of Cheyenne Wells won the Pat Lesar Memorial Award for Outstanding Wrestler. He was the champion at 132 pounds.

The Class 2A State Meet will begin Thursday at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

Jurney said that it will be a difficult task to repeat at state champions this year.

"There's some good teams out there," Jurney said. "Paonia's good, Cedaredge is good and Wray is really good, so there's good parity. It will be whoever comes to wrestle and get some bonus points down below."
