Walter R. Jorgenson

September 12, 1923 - January 3, 2018

A Memorial Service for W.R. (Richard) Jorgenson was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Horber Funeral Chapel in Las Animas, Colorado.

Walter Richard Jorgenson, known to most as Richard, was born on September 12, 1923 in Las Animas, Colorado to Ted and Martha (Purvis) Jorgenson.  He passed away on January 3, 2018 in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the age of 94.

Richard grew up in the town of his birth and lived there for a large portion on his life, and his love for his home community ran deep.  In his youth, Richard attended the University of Georgia; he trained as a pilot and served in the Navy during World War II.  He was aboard the USS Lexington during the Battle of the Coral Sea until the ship’s sinking on May 8, 1942.

Mr. Jorgenson was past president of the First National Bank of Las Animas, as well as the President of the Independent Banks of Colorado.  He spent much of his time in civic service, serving as the President of the Las Animas Chamber of Commerce, which named him Man of the Year several times.  He was a member of the Elks, the Shriners, and the Lions.  As an avid golfer, he became instrumental in the development of the Las Animas Golf Course.

Richard was a quiet man, soft-spoken and gentle, always upbeat and optimistic, ready to lend a hand to anyone who needed it.  He loved his family and took care to make sure they were well and happy.  He loved a good laugh, and always had a joke at the ready.  Along with golfing, Richard spent many happy hours in his garden.

Mr. Jorgenson is survived by his wife, Lorna (Thomas) Jorgenson; daughter, Joyce (Jerry) Maupin; son, Richard Jorgenson; step-children, John Sobeck, David Sobeck, and Kathy (Sobeck) Davis; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; seve step-grandchildren; and nine great-step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Martha; sister, Dorothy Ann; and his first wife, Betty.
