The Las Animas Trojans hit the hardwood this week in two home events featuring formidable league opponents. The Trojans, having won only one game this season but having shown tremendous growth as a team before the winter break, looked to rebound against a last second loss last week against Swink.

On Thursday night against Rocky Ford, the Trojans fell early and fast. Outscored 22-11 in the first quarter, the Trojans tried to fight back, and in the second half, they made up some ground but it was too little too late for the Trojans. They fell to the Meloneers 68-45.

Diego Hernandez and Cutter Nichols both had 10 points in the Trojans’ campaign. while Nichols and Nick Chavez each recorded 6 rebounds apiece.

The next night, without any time to recover, the Trojans faced 1A power, turned Santa Fe League member and 2A power, the Holly Wildcats. The Wildcats bust through the gates in the first quarter scoring 28 points to the Trojans’ 2 and only allowed 2 more points from the Trojans in the second quarter. With a 42-4 deficit, the Trojans kept battling in the second half scoring 25 and only allowing 23. The end result, however, was Holly 65; Las Animas 29.

Nick Chavez put up 11 points for the Trojans and Cutter Nichols led with 7 rebounds.

This week. the Trojans travel to Ordway to face the Crowley County Chargers on Friday. Game time is 4 p.m. On Saturday, the Trojans host the Rye Thunderbolts at 1 p.m. in Las Animas.
