Mrs. Joan Matthew, longtime resident of Hereford, Texas, passed away Wednesday, January 30, at the age of 94.
Memorial Service to be held Monday, February 4, at 10 a.m. in the Hereford Heritage Rose Chapel of Hereford, Texas.
Joan was born November 9, 1924, to Lee and Helen (Durbin) Cover in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. She graduated from Rocky Ford High School in Rocky Ford, Colorado. While in school, she met the love of her life, Elvin Leroy Matthew, in 9th grade. The two later married on May 18, 1945, in Raton, New Mexico, while Elvin was still in the military. The couple settled in Cheraw, Colorado, and made their living on the family farm for over 50 years before moving to Hereford, Texas, to be near their beloved grandchildren.
Joan was a loving, kind and hardworking wife and mother to her family. She paid careful attention to their proper upbringing and fine manners. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and especially enjoyed playing games with them and cooking for them. Her kind heart was full of love for them and she had high expectations for them. She stayed busy as a homemaker and worked in the banking industry for over 18 years.
Mrs. Matthew is preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, Durbin Cover, and sister, Barbara Adams.
Left behind to cherish her memory are Elvin, her husband of 73 years, her daughter Susan Matthew and Susan’s children Leslynn and husband Shawn Arfsten Kathleen and husband Matt Collier, all of Hereford, Texas, and her son Ben Matthew and wife Gracie and their children Travis and wife Shelby Matthew, Chris and wife Malinda Matthew, and Dustin and wife Brooke Matthew, all of Cheraw, Colorado. Also surviving her are 12 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends all of whom love and will miss her greatly.
