The season came to a conclusion for the Cheraw High School girls' basketball team, as it lost to Cheyenne Wells 42-39 Tuesday in the Class 1A District 2 Tournament at the Lamar Community Building.

The Lady Tigers took off to an 11-2 lead after the first quarter, but the Lady Wolverines closed the deficit to 23-18 at halftime.

Cheraw outscored Cheyenne Wells 13-7 in the third quarter to take a 36-35 lead. The lead exchanged hands in the fourth quarter, with the Lady Tigers outscoring the Lady Wolverines 12-8 in the final period.

Individual statistics were unavailable.

Cheraw finishes the season with eight wins and 12 losses.

In Tuesday's other game, Eads eliminated Granada with a 49-22 victory.

Cheyenne Wells will play Kit Carson in one semifinal game today, while Eads will play top-ranked Kit Carson in the other.

In the boys' tournament, Kit Carson defeated Eads 62-47 and Granada defeated Cheyenne Wells 34-26.

Kit Carson will play McClave today, while Cheyenne Wells or Granada will play sixth-ranked Cheraw.

The third-place and championship games for each bracket will be played on Saturday.

The top three finishers in both the boys and girls will play in regional tournaments next week.

Class 2A District 3 Tournament

The Class 1A District 3 Tournament also began on Tuesday with two games at the Lamar Community College Wellness Center.

In the first game, the Kim/Branson co-op team kept its season alive by defeating Walsh 47-22. Statistics were unavailable.

The Lady Mustangs (12-7) will play second-ranked South Baca in the semifinals Thursday at 4:40 p.m. The other semifinal will have Springfield against Wiley at 2 p.m.

In the second game on Tuesday, Wiley defeated South Baca 66-45.

Thursday's semifinals will have Kim/Branson against Springfield at 3:20 p.m. and South Baca against Walsh at 6 p.m.

The championship and third place games for each bracket will be on Saturday.

Like the District 2 Tournament, the top three teams in each bracket in District 3 will advance to regional play next week.
