Twenty two of the Arkansas Valley's 46 state qualifiers won their first round matches at their respective state wrestling tournaments Thursday at the Pepsi Center.

Class 3A

La Junta

Two of La Junta's seven representative were victorious in the first round. Defending state champion Isaiah Gamez (120) pinned Jefferson's Daniel Soto in 3:34, while Mitchell Peabody (195) won by a 7-2 decision over Fort Morgan's Chrisnel Akele.

The other Tigers competing were Benny Diego Gonzales (106), losing to Weld Central's Robert Estrada in 46 seconds, Brandon Nelson (126), who lost to Berthoud's L.T. Torres in 4:30, Wyatt Hoeppner (170), who lost by a 22-7 technical fall to Bennett's Mason Wakeham and Ryan Metzger (220), who lost in 27 seconds to Eagle Valley's Cody Ponce.

La Junta is tied for 22nd place with six points.

Alamosa leads the team standings with 28 1/2 points. Lamar is second with 28, Pagosa Springs is third with 22, Berthoud is fourth with 19 1/2, and Eagle Valley is fifth with 18.

Class 2A

Rocky Ford

Rocky Ford had six of its 12 state qualifiers win in the first round.

Michael Maldonado (113) pinned Lyons' Monte Pickering in 1:19, Dillon Jaramillo (120) defeated Wray's Jake Dickson 4-0, Joziah Maestas (132) defeated Centauri's Jordan Martin 10-7, Santino Mendoza (145) defeated Cedaredge's A.J. Robideaux 4-0, Jesse Tapia (195) pinned Wiggins' Dillon Harshman in 1:43 and Simon Apodaca (220) defeated Meeker's Ridge Williams 6-1.

The rest of the Meloneers included David Duran (106) losing to Cedaredge's Lane Hunsberger 3-0, Quinton Venard (126) lost to Centauri's Eyan Chavez 17-8, David Medina (145) lost to Centauri's Zach Martin in 3:13, Isiah Garcia (160) lost to Ignacio's Dustin Sanchez 3-2, and Peyton Froman (285) was pinned by Centauri's Bennie Chacon in 30 seconds.

Rocky is tied for fifth place with 16 points.

Crowley County

Right behind the Meloneers is Crowley County in seventh place with 15 1/2 points. Four of the nine Chargers at state won their first round matches.

The Crowley County victors were Jared Bauer (145) pinning Monte Vista's Zach Hindes in 1:39, Adam Schutlz (152) defeating Meeker's Dax Sheridan 18-3, Jorge Valdez (170) pinning Ignacio's Clay Campbell in 50 seconds, and Lane Walter (220) pinning Paonia's Austyn Norris on 3:06.

The remaining Chargers saw Tach Brewer (126) lose to Cedaredge's Adrian Nieto 3-2, Tanner Howells (138) lost to John Mall's Wesley Van Matre in 5:45, Zach Auchterlonie (160) lost to Norwood's Austin Overholt in 3:06, Jaden Harris lost to Nucla's Will Gabriel in 3:28, and Jacob Karle (285) lost to Cedaredge's Derek Sanchez in 51 seconds.

County Line

The County Line Rivals are in eighth place with 14 points. The Rivals had four of their seven wrestlers win in the first round.

Winning for County Line were Aiden Michael (138) over Mountain Valley's Isiah Wellman in 3:28, Dawson Roesch (182) defeated Ignacio's Cesar Pedregon 6-2, undefeated Jayce Bauer pinned Soroco's Tristan Singer in 42 seconds, and Chase Stolzenberger (185) pinned Dolores Huert'as Ramon Romero in 3:38.

Also for County Line, Jonathon Burbank (132) lost to Monte Vista's Tyler Vigil in 3:32, Zach Fowler (160) lost to Paonia's Grey Neal in 3:37, and A.J. Wilk (170) lost to Soroco's Jace Logan in 2:34.

Fowler

Fowler is tied for 10th place with 13 points. Four of the six Grizzlies won their first round matches.

Defending state champion Seth McFall (106) pinned West Grand's David Santos in 1:34, Dylan Palomino (152) defeated Cedaredge's Austin Crawford 3-2, Orin Carnes (170) defeated John Mall's Kaleb Rehm 10-2, and J.J. Horn (220) pinned Hanover's Brandon Clark in 4:35.

Rgw rest of the Grizzlies saw Fernando Salazar lost to Swink's Michael Romero 13-0, and David Salazar (138) lost to Paonia's Sackett Chesnik in 1:59.

Swink

Swink is tied for 25th with seven points with two of the four Lions winning on Thursday.

In addition to Romero's win, Kaleb Fisher (152) pinned Mancos' Coly Fury in 5:57.

The other two Lions saw Adam Nolte (132) lost to John Mall's Anthony Aldretti 13-4, and Matthew Mendoza lost to Sierra Grande/Centennial's Alejandro Velasquez 11-4.

Las Animas

Las Animas' sole representative, Jacob Lucero (106) lost to Rye's Cole Miller 6-0.

Wray is at the top of the team standings with 34 1/2 points. Cedaredge, John Mall and Lyons are tied for second with 20, and Paonia and Rocky Ford are tied for fifth place.

The state tournament resumes Friday morning at 9 a.m. with the championship quarterfinals.
