Five wrestlers from the Arkansas Valley battled for individual state championships in the final day of the Colorado Highh School Activities Association state tournaments Saturday at the Pepsi Center.

Three of them were successful, including a pair of defending state champions.

La Junta's Isaiah Gamez won the Class 3A 120-pound championship by defeating Lamar's Ethan Andrade, a competitor that had defeated Gamez not once, but twice this year.

There was no score after the first period. Gamez started the second period on the bottom and scored a quick escape.

That turned out to be the only scoring of the match.

Andrade started the third period on the bottom and attempted to escape several times. However, Gamez was able to keep Andrade on the mat to take a 1-0 victory and his second straight state title.

Fowler's Seth McFall easily defended the Class 2A 106-pound championship by pinning Rye's Cole Miller.

McFall scored an early takedown and added five points on nearfalls before finishing off Miller at the 1:29 mark.

McFall was also named the Class 2A Outstanding Wrestler.

Rocky Ford's Jesse Tapia won the Class 2A 195-pound title with an overtime win over Paonia's Anthony Felice.

The first period was scoreless, but Felice scored an early escape. Tapia took down Felice late in the period, but Felice escaped just before the period ended.

Felice recorded a takedown, but Tapia scored a reversal to tie the score at 4-4 and sent the match into overtime.

Tapia scored the title-winning takedown with 24 seconds left in the overtime for a 6-4 win.

Another Rocky Ford wrestler, Dillon Jaramillo, who won the state championship as a sophomore, was denied a second title in the Class 2A 120-pound championship against Cedaredge's Trey Geyer.

Jaramillo scored first, but Geyer reversed the hold and pinned Jaramillo in 1:46.

County Line's Jayce Bauer was looking to cap off an undefeated season in the Class 2A 220-pound championship against Cedaredge's Taj Van der Linde.

Van der Linde scored a takedown in the first period. After a scoreless second period, Van der Linde recorded a reversal for a 4-0 win.
