The Las Animas High School Track and Field squad is off and running at Jack LaSalle Field each day after school.
The Trojans, under head coach Addie Wallace and assistant Bob Beebe, have a young and experienced squad, with just one school record holder: junior Gabe DeVargas, among a large conglomerate of juniors on the team.
“A lot of people look at win-loss records and judge success, but track and field is much different than that," said Wallace. "If someone was to log on to Milesplit and check out our students’ times and see their improvement from the beginning to the end of the season, success is there. The challenge Coach Beebe and I have is to find combinations of athletes to run relays and place students where they can improve and represent Las Animas the best, and hopefully those combinations run fast enough and improve enough to qualify for state in May.”
The Trojans’ first meet is March 23 in Lamar. Field events start at 8 and running events start at 9 a.m.
