The Las Animas Trojan Track and Field squad loaded up for their first of many early mornings and went to Lamar for the annual Lamar Savage Invitational.

On the boys’ side, with eight on the roster, the Trojans have the opportunity to make some noise in the local meets.

The Lamar meet, as coaches learn who works best in which events, the Trojans earned no points and had no top-eight finishes.

A major up-and-coming athlete for the Trojans is Drew Huffman, who finished in the top 20 in the 400-meter run. As a sophomore, Huffman has the possibility of growing tremendously over the season and next couple of years.

On the girls’ side, there are only five athletes on the roster.

The Lady Trojans were led by sophomore Shelby Eck, who placed 10th in the long jump with a jump of 13-11.75”.

The Trojans will travel to the La Junta Open this week, which begins at 10 a.m. Friday.
