The Las Animas Trojan Track and Field team hit the road last Friday morning and attacked the Cheyenne Wells Invitational.
On the boys side of the results, there was plenty to be excited about. The boys 3200M relay shaved nearly 17 seconds off of their time from the La Junta Invitational last week for a new time of 9:09, which bumped their state ranking up to eighth place overall. Their time earned them third place in the meet, but one team was 1A McClave Cardinals, and the other was fifth-ranked Peyton.
Individually, Gabe DeVargas broke his own school record in the 800M run with a time of 2:04.13, placing him third at the state level. He also placed second in the 3200M Run.
James Zook placed eight in the 400M run with a run of 59.68; and Maranatha DeVargas placed third in the 1600M run with a 5:18.24.
Those who didn’t place still set personal records in their events.
On the girls’ side, much of the same as far as improvement, with Shelby Eck placing sixth in the 100M dash with a time of 14.37 and placing fifth in the long jump with 13-feet, 10-inches.
This week the Trojans travel to Rocky Ford for the Santa Fe League meet, and then will travel to Springfield on Saturday.
