The Las Animas High School boys and girls track and field teams hit the road twice this week; first  to Primero for the annual Primero Invitational on Thursday, and then to Springfield on Saturday for the Longhorn Invite.

The boys team continued its streak of improvement in the mid-distance races. 

In Primero, Maranatha and Gabe DeVargas placed first and and second in the 3,200-meter run respectively; the 800-meter relay took second overall with a time of 1:44; and James Zook finished fourth in the 400-meter race in 56.72.

The Trojans' 3200-meter relay team recorded a personal record, running the race in 9:04. The relay team is currently ranked 13th in a clump of teams within two or three seconds of one another.

Gabe DeVargas' time in the 800-meter run still ranks as the No. 7 time in Class 2A, according

The boys team amassed 50 points and placed third as a team.

On the girls’ side, Shelby Eck placed seventh in the 200-meter run.

In Springfield, three Trojans placed in the 3,200-meter race. Gabe DeVargas finished first and Marantha DeVargas placed second while Alex Torres finished fifth.

The boys 3,200-meter relay team won with a time of 9:16. The 800-meter relay finished fourth in 1:43.

Markus Vigil placed seventh in the 300-meter hurdles at 51.53, and fourth in the high jump with a jump of 5-feet, 2-inches.

Maranatha DeVargas set a personal record by posting a time of 11:25 in the 3,200-meter run which places him 27th in the state. Gabe DeVargas ranks 11th in the same category with his time from Tiger Relays a few weeks ago.

The Trojan 8,000-meter relay set a personal record and are ranked 33rd overall. The No. 1 and No. 33 ranked teams are separated by 10 seconds.

On the girls’ side, Eck placed 11th in the 100-meter run and 12th in the 200.

This week the Trojans travel to Rocky Ford for a make-up Santa Fe League Meet before heading to Walsenburg for the Cinco de Mayo Invitational on Friday.
