The Las Animas High School track and field teams traveled to a windy Burlington Friday for the last meet to qualify for state rankings.
Despite the wind, the Trojans did send some students to the podium.
Gabe DeVargas won the 800-meter run and his brother Marantha DeVargas won the 3,200-meter run.
The boys 3,200-meter relay finished third, James Zook placed seventh in the 400, Markus Vigil finished seventh in the 300-meter hurdles and the boys 800-meter relay finished seventh.
For the girls, Shelby Eck was fifth in the 200-meter run, fourth in long jump, fourth in shot put and seventh in the 100-meter dash. Jimmi Boyd was seventh in the shot put.
As of Sunday May 12, the following Las Animas Trojans are qualified for the Class 2A state track meet on May 16 at Jeffco Stadium in Denver: Gabe DeVargas, 800-meter run; and the boys 3,200-meter relay.
DeVargas is currently ranked 20th in state rankings in the 3,200, but if two runners become ineligible, or choose not to run at the state meet, then he will be eligible to run in their place. The top-18 ranked participants in each event qualify for State.
DeVargas will run the 800-meter race at 12:35 p.m. May 17. The 3,200-meter relay team will race at 4:45 p.m. May 16. Dates and times are tentative.
