The Las Animas Lady Trojans kicked off their season this week against the South Baca Lady Patriots.

The Lady Trojans stood strong against a larger, hard-hitting Lady Patriots squad. In the first game, the Lady Trojans struck out to a 14-7 lead, only to see South Baca come back to win 25-22.

In the second, the Lady Patriots dominated and won 25-17.

But the Lady Trojans overcame a four-point deficit to win 25-21 to extend the match.

Finally, the Lady Patriots hammered home the final game with a 25-21 win to take the match 3-1.

Despite the loss, the Lady Trojans looked strong on both sides of the ball with hard hitting coming from Shelby Eck, who led the team with nine kills; blocking led by Eck; and digs from Julyana Gonzales, who led with 20.

One key injury during the match was Ceeley Turner, who went down with an apparent rolled ankle during the third match. Turner did not return to play.

This week, the Lady Trojans face the Fowler Lady Grizzlies in Fowler at 4 p.m. This is a change in schedule as it was originally scheduled to play in Las Animas, but that changed due to construction in Las Animas. The Lady Trojans will travel to Rocky Ford to face the Lady Meloneers. Game time in Rocky Ford is 4:30 p.m.
