With the holidays looming, that means one thing in Trojan country: the beginning of winter sports.
The coaching carousel that is high school sports hit winter sports hard with coach Sam Vigil the only returning winter coach with the Trojan wrestlers. The Trojans currently have six wrestlers out for the sport and they will travel to Peyton for their first invite on Dec. 7.
On the hardwood, the Las Animas Lady Trojans basketball team has a returning coach in Carl Lindauer. He and assistant Grace Miller bring a slew of coaching experience to the Lady Trojans, who look to regain a seat atop the Santa Fe League. With a strong senior group including Julyana Gonzales, Hailey Davidson, Shakira Gallegos, Madi Gonzales and Ally Magana, the young women are tired of being at the bottom of the league and are putting in the work to be front-runners.
On the other side of the court, the boys are being coached by Jaxon Meardon and EJ Gallegos. Both have college basketball experience, and Meardon is a former 1A player of the year. The Trojans have a big group of seniors, including Cutter Nichols, Miles Rader, Diego Trujillo, and Nick Chavez, who accounted for a major percentage of the Trojans’ output last season. This will be a major turn from last season when the Trojans only had two returning players.
Trojan fans have much to look forward to in the next few weeks as wrestling takes off, the Trojans host a basketball scrimmage this Wednesday at 10 a.m. for the girls and noon for the boys. Then the following week, both basketball teams travel to Centauri for the annual Mountain Classic on Dec. 5-7. Then om Dec. 13-14, the Trojans will host the second annual Breaking Blue Tournament.
