The Trojans played back-to-back Santa Fe League games this week, and were on the road for both.
First on Thursday night, the Trojans went into the Melon Dome to face the No. 2-ranked Meloneers in Rocky Ford. The Trojans jumped out to a strong 15-7 lead in the first quarter. From there, the Meloneers began to claw back, but the Trojans maintained a 26-22 lead at the half.
But the Meloneers kept clawing. In the third, they outscored the Trojans by 5 to take a 36-35 lead, and come the fourth quarter, the Trojans couldn’t buy a bucket. They mustered 7 points, but that wasn’t enough as the Meloneers pulled away with a 52-42 victory.
After a hard-fought, close game against a quality team, the Trojans faced another quality team the next night without much time to regroup. Hoping to bust a winter homecoming in Holly, the Trojans took the floor against what many thought would be a rebuilding Wildcat squad.
Holly came out smoking hot in the first as they scored 23 to the Trojans’ 10, and then both teams were even in the second with 13. At the half, the Trojans were down 36-23. The third quarter was the equivalent to a brick wall for the Trojans as they could only amass 2 points to the Wildcats’ 17. That quarter was the proverbial nail in the coffin as the Wildcats won 67-37.
This week the Trojans are on the road yet again as they travel to Ordway on Friday with a 5 p.m. JV start, and then again on Saturday to Rye with a 2 p.m. JV start.
