Catherine “Cathy” Gail Samaniego, 70, of Las Animas, Colo., was called home April 10, 2020, surrounded by her family’s love.

Cathy was born to Buford and Petronilla (Munch) Stine, Oct. 22, 1949, in Las Animas. Cathy graduated from Las Animas High School in 1967 and then attended Barnes Business College in Pueblo where she received her education in office administration.

She married her high school sweetheart and best friend, Robert “Bob” Samaniego, in 1968, and they built their lives in Las Animas under a deep devotion to the concept of, “the family, above all else.”

Cathy spent her career working at the Fort Lyon V.A. Medical Center, retiring as the secretary to the director. She took great pride helping to serve our veterans’ needs throughout her career, and she made many life-long friends at the Fort over her decades of service.

Cathy enjoyed spending retirement with her family, especially her young grandchildren, Savannah and Ethan. She also enjoyed trips to Cripple Creek where she made more dear friends while playing the slots, taking long car rides “out south” with her husband and making delicious food for her grateful family. She will be remembered as a kind person who was always willing to help others.

Cathy is survived by her life-long and loving husband, Bob, of the family home; their three children, Robert (Sue) Samaniego, of La Junta, Colo.; Michael Samaniego, of Denver, Colo.; and Michelle (Adam Baca) Samaniego, of Las Animas. She is also survived by grandchildren, Savannah Samaniego and Ethan Baca; sister, Cecelia (Joe Bob) Hawkins, of Las Animas; and many cousins, nephews and nieces, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Wayland Ellis; and brothers, Carol Stine, Clayton Stine, and Charles Stine.

Per Cathy’s request, a private family viewing was held on Saturday, April 11, 2020, and cremation followed. Inurnment and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Cathy and her family request donations be made to Arkansas Valley Hospice, or another hospice organization of donor’s choice in care of Horber Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 431, Las Animas, Colo., 81054.
