By Kim MacDonnell
I’m Kim MacDonnell, and I am seeking re-election as Bent County Commissioner, District 1. It has been my privilege to serve as your elected representative for the past four years. Serving my community is an honor, and is a continuation of the service, commitment and involvement that my family and I have enjoyed in Bent County for five generations.
For those of you who don’t know me, I grew up in Bent County, went to school here and moved away for a short time; but for the past two and half decades have again made this my home. During this time, I have raised my family, said goodbye to loved ones, and together with my husband owned and operated a successful small business.
I have always been active in the community and have operated on a principle of giving back. In addition to serving as a County Commissioner I was twice elected to serve on the Las Animas School District Board of Education. I was the Chair of the Board for four years. I have been the Executive Director of the Bent County Development Foundation on two occasions and have been a private contributor to the Foundation for over 20 years because my husband and I are so passionate about the economic health and well-being of our community.
In addition, I have served on many boards and committees, have been involved with local civic organizations and have participated in numerous volunteer activities. I love my community and its people and want to see Bent County grow and prosper. If reelected I will work tirelessly for my home exactly as I have been doing for the last 25 years.
Lastly, but of first importance, is my faith in God. My faith undergirds everything that I do. I will continue to operate my public service on the foundation of faith, hope and love.
Why I am running for reelection: Experience matters. The Board of Commissioners is responsible for ensuring many things. Some of the more visible are providing the Courthouse, managing the county budget, overseeing roads and bridges, administering the Department of Social Services and overseeing Public Health.
In addition to overseeing these core services, the Commissioners are responsible for doing the County’s business in ways that strengthen and diversify the economy and that protect the community from threats. Most of these areas are extremely complicated and nuanced and it takes a lot to be a good County Commissioner. Experience matters. I have spent numerous hours learning, reading, meeting and connecting so that I am fully prepared to discuss and make decisions about critical county concerns.
I believe that my background and tenacity have made me a successful Commissioner. If I am reelected, Bent County will continue to benefit from my passion for the community, my experience, my background and my ability to collaborate with others to continue to move our County forward.
I care about the people of this community and what matters to them. I listen to others, and value their opinion. As Commissioner, I am honored to hear the concerns of community members and am in a position to address them.
There are competing issues, and we may not always be on the same side, but you will be listened to and I am always willing to consider opinions and perspectives other than my own.
I would appreciate your vote in November and would love to talk to about Bent County and the issues that are facing us. I will also be launching a new web site soon www.kimmacdonnell.com, where you can read more about the County’s activities, my priorities, and where you can leave a personal message.
