Experienced Cheraw High School girls basketball optimistic for 2021 season
After going 11-11 in the 2019-20 season, the Cheraw High School girls basketball team is optimistic for this season.
"The girls played hard all year and improved immensely by the season's end," said Cheraw coach Roger Davis. "They led a tough McClave team most of the game in the league tournament and they proved they could play with the best teams in our league."
The Wolverines have good reason to be optimistic as 11 players, including all five starters, return.
Leading Cheraw are McKenzie Bartholomew, who averaged 6.3 points per game and was on the High Plains League's All-Defensive team, Heaven-Lee Marquez, who averaged 11.2 points, Marisol Marquez, who averaged 7.2 points, Morgan McReynolds averaged 6.7 points, Abby Provost, who averaged 5.4 points, Sheridan Honey, who averaged 3.3 points, and Regan Stoker, who averaged 2.6 points.
Also returning are Hailey Scofield, Sierra Allsworth, Dray Hall and Laura Hernandez.
The Wolverines have three promising newcomers in freshmen Crislyn Miell, K.J. Phillips and Aeryn Bernal.
The High Plains League promises to be tough again this year.
"The league will be good top to bottom with many returning starters," Davis said. "McClave, Kit Carson, Eads and Granada all have their top players returning. Cheyenne Wells will be young," Davis said. "McClave was a Final 8 team last year, Kit Carson was a tough matchup last year with just one senior. Eads upset Kit Carson in our league tournament and it will be good again this year. Granada returns everyone and will be improved."
The Wolverines have set some high goals for this year.
"They are thankful and excited for the opportunity to play this season," Davis said. "We have high expectations and will be competing for a state berth."
