She may be the only freshman on the La Junta High School volleyball team, but Reece Addington is already making some big contributions.

She started for the Tigers in their home match against St. Mary's on Thursday. The Tigers were defeated by the Pirates 25-15 and 25-11 in the first two sets, but La Junta gave St. Mary's all it could handle in the third before losing 25-22.

"I'm very proud of the girls and the hard work we have putting in," said LJ coach Michelle Montoya. "It's starting to show."

Addington has started two matches so far this season.

"She's stepped up her game and she's stepped in an made big play when we needed her," Montoya said.

"I love playing on this team," Addington said. "It's so much fun. I love all the girls."

Addington comes from a very athletic family who all played for La Junta. Her father, Gary, played football and baseball for the Tigers. Her mother, Kelly (Blair) played volleyball, basketball and tennis. Her older sister, Lauren, played volleyball and basketball, and her older brother, Ty, played football, basketball and baseball.

All of those family members went on to play at Otero Junior College where Ty is currently a relief pitcher on the baseball team. Gary was also the softball and baseball coach, the athletic director and is currently dean of students.

Add to that her grandfather, Bob Blair, who is a La Junta Hall of Famer.

"I've learned a lot from my sister and my mom, to," Addington said. "My sister especially. I grew up with her and she helped me and she's a setter, too. So she helped me grow into the person that I am right now."

Leading the Tigers in Thursday's match were Raini Tafoya and Jordan Phillips, who both had six kills.

La Junta (2-3, 0-3 Tri-Peaks League) will host Florence on Tuesday.
