La Junta volleyball wins five-set battle with Cheraw

It was a genuine battle on Wednesday as the Cheraw High School volleyball team hosted La Junta at the Wolverines Den.

The match went five sets and each of the sets were close. The Wolverines won the first set 25-23, but the Tigers won the second 25-22. Cheraw took the third set 25-20, however, La Junta claimed the fourth set 25-18.

The fifth set was close to the end with La Junta winning by a score of 16-14 to also claim the match victory.

"Cheraw's a very good team," said LJ coach Michelle Montoya. "It was a fun game. All of our subs go in and everybody does their jobs and we get the win."

"We really figured how to get back together and work as a team," said La Junta's Sierra Reisch. "We came out and got our serves in, our digs and our hits back to go in."

"We played hard," said Cheraw coach Kassidy Froese. "We made adjustments early. We haven't played any teams that are that tall, so it was a little new for us. But we adjusted, we played well and I thought we played really well."

A lot of Tigers contributed to the win. Malionna Palacio and Raini Tafoya led in kills with 12 apiece, followed by Reisch with nine. Reece Addington led in assists with 19, followed by Reisch with 12 and Jayden Romero with nine. Addington also led in service aces with four with Romero, Solie Ptolemy and Angelina Sanchez all adding two. Sanchez had the match-winner with her second service ace.

"I don't care if I hit or set," Reisch said. "As long as I get playing time. But I love playing with all the girls and everything. So wherever they put me in, I'll do whatever I want."

For Cheraw, Morgan McReynolds and McKenzie Bartholomew led in kills with nine each, followed by Marisol Marquez with seven. Sheridan Honey led in assists with 22, followed by Crislyn Miell with seven. Kennede Phillips led in aces with four, followed by Heaven-lee Marquez with three.

La Junta (4-3, 1-3 Tri-Peaks League) will host Colorado Springs Christian on Saturday and Salida on Monday.

Cheraw (3-3, 1-2 High Plains League) will host Granada Friday and Sierra Grande on Saturday.
