One inmate was killed and six others were injured Monday in a lightning strike at the Belmont Correctional Institution in St. Clairsville, the prison confirmed Wednesday.

Lightning struck the prison’s recreation yard just before 6:30 p.m. The men had been in the recreation yard “in close proximity” to Dalin Anderson, 33, of Summit County, said Eric Lyle, public information officer at the prison.

Anderson, who has been in the prison since 2005, serving time for felony drug possession and illegal possession of chemicals, was killed.

Lyle said three inmates were treated at the prison for injuries. One inmate was taken to a local hospital, and another was taken to the OSU Medical Center in Columbus, Lyle said.
